Acai Smoothie Bowl Recipe

You’ve seen them in your local healthy brunch spots and all over your favourite lifestyle Instagram accounts, but now you can finally make your own açaí bowl right at home. All you need is a frozen açaí packet, frozen fruit, and a splash of almond milk, and you’re on your way to açaí bowl heaven.

Açaí bowls are normally served ice cream style thick and with an envious amount of toppings. However, this is no ordinary bowl of ice cream – açaí is an antioxidant rich berry from the Amazon rainforest, and has become increasingly popular amongst health and fitness lovers as another superfood. It’s a low sugar berry packed full of health benefits like antioxidants, powerful minerals and vitamins, and even healthy fats.

These açaí bowls are fantastic to serve on the weekend when you have the time to enjoy a big smoothie bowl. The base is quite simple – just frozen açaí, banana and raspberries. This leaves you to have a little fun with the toppings. My favourite is banana slices, cacao nibs, goji berries, and a generous handful of homemade granola. If you don’t have time to make granola on the weekends, look for granolas with low added sugar, and the fewer ingredients, the better!

Obviously the most important part of the açaí bowl is the açaí itself – organic and high quality açaí is key to the best flavour (and nutrients). You may have seen açaí powder in health food stores, but if you use the powder you will need to add additional frozen fruit to your blender in order to get the super thick smoothie bowl texture. For the best results, use organic frozen açaí pulp. I sourced my frozen açaí from Amazonian, a local Swiss company. Amazonian doesn’t use any preservatives or binders in their processing of the açaí berries into frozen pulp. It’s frozen within 24 hours of harvesting the berries in order to preserve all its nutritional benefits. And the best part – it blends up perfectly with frozen fruit to create the desired ice cream like thickness.

Smoothie Bowl:

  • One frozen organic açaí packet*
  • ½ cup frozen raspberries
  • ½ frozen banana
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk

*purchased from Amazonian:

  • Banana slices
  • Fresh berries or pomegranate seeds
  • Handful of granola
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs
  • Other suggested toppings: goji berries, hemp seeds, coconut shavings

Add almond milk, frozen berries and banana to your high speed blender. Carefully slice open the frozen açaí packet with a knife, and squeeze out the açaí pulp into the blender. Blend everything together until completely smooth, stopping along the way to stir the mixture and scrape down the sides of your blender if it gets stuck, until you’ve reached a thicker consistency for a smoothie bowl.

Pour into a large bowl, and add toppings of your choice. Eat with a spoon and enjoy!
