Cacao Raspberry smoothie : The Natural antidepressant.

This cacao raspberry smoothie is truly decadent – rich cacao powder with creamy almond butter, sweetened with swirls of fresh raspberries. Adding cacao to my smoothies is one of my favourite things when I feel like something a bit more indulgent. I’ve used raw organic cacao powder in this smoothie – it has a slightly bitter chocolate flavour but with the addition of a frozen banana and maple sweetened raspberries, you have yourself a healthy chocolate breakfast smoothie – a win-win!

Raw cacao powder is different from cocoa powder in that cacao powder is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. This process allows you to truly take in all of the nutritional benefits that cacao offers. On the other hand, cocoa powder is roasted at high temperatures. This can remove the benefits from the cacao beans, and you really don’t want to miss out on these – cacao is a great source of magnesium and iron, as well as antioxidants. Plus, it acts as a natural stimulant and is a source of the “bliss” chemical (you know – the one responsible for the good feeling from eating a piece of chocolate). This makes it the perfect breakfast option: a natural boost to your energy and mood!


Raspberry Swirl:

-½ cup fresh raspberries

-½ tsp of maple syrup


Cacao Smoothie:

-1 cup cold almond milk, unsweetened

-1 frozen banana (peel and slice a ripe banana, freeze overnight)

-1 tbsp. natural almond butter

-1 heaping tbsp. cacao powder

-Dash of fresh ground sea salt

-½ cup cold water on hand (if required for blending)


Cacao raspberry smoothie toppings:

-Handful of granola

-Handful of fresh raspberries

-1 tsp cacao nibs


Place the raspberries in the bottom of your smoothie glass and lightly mash with the back of a spoon. Add maple syrup to the mashed berries and combine together. Bring some of the muddled raspberry mixture up onto the insides of the glass. Set aside.

Add all ingredients for the cacao smoothie to your high speed blender, and blend until completely smooth. Pour into the glass and watch as the smoothie blends into the raspberry swirls – perfection! Top with granola, cacao nibs, and additional fresh raspberries if desired.
