“I remembered the smell of ponds, the smell of jasmine, the smell of wet stones, of plum trees, kumquats and giant bamboos. It was all there, and in the ponds there were even carp steadily working towards their hundredth birthday.” — Jean-Claude Ellena
Last night I was lucky enough to attend the launch of Hermès’ latest perfume at 155 New Bond street. Reportedly the last in a series of five in the Jardin series by Jean Claude Ellena, Hermès’ exclusive in-house perfumer since 2004.
As I made my way to the perfume counter in store to discover Le Jardin de Monsieur Li , I was pleased to overhear a series of “mmms” of pleasure from fellow guests savouring the fragrance for the first time.
Perfectly unisex and not too sharp , Le Jardin de Monsieur Li has a distinct smell of citrus .. although not quite what I initially expected when I found out it was kumquat ( chinese oranges).
This soft spoken scent does trigger your imagination … perhaps a memory of a walk through a chinese garden with hints of Jasmine, Watery Notes, Kumquat, Grassy Notes drawing a blurred line between reality and imagination.
The legerity of the scent makes it ideal for summer and just like the graceful ,elegant and serene woman who wears it , Le Jardin de Monsieur Li cannot be ignored.
